This is a great dentist to go to. I’m not exactly sure about prices, but I am aware that they take Green Mountain Medicaid, which is my insurance. I’m very grateful for this because not a lot of dentist offices near by take my insurance, which can be really difficult. They have a nice waiting room, with multiple chairs, plants, and even a TV!

Dr. Alexander is an amazing dentist. He helped my 14 year old daughter build her confidence by repairing some problematic teeth she had that affected her smile. He even helped us secure transportation once because he was concerned about my daughter's well-being after having some major work done!!!! He made sure she received the care she needed when we otherwise wouldn't have been able to be there. Both my daughter's think very highly of Dr. Alexander. As do I.

The Wisdom Teeth Procedure: Navigating a Smooth Path to Dental Comfort

Understanding Wisdom Teeth Extraction and Its Importance for Oral Health

As we journey through life, our mouths continue to change, and one significant milestone in dental development is the emergence of wisdom teeth. These third molars typically appear in late adolescence or early adulthood, but they don’t always bring wisdom. In fact, they can often lead to dental problems and discomfort. At Union Street Dental, we believe in proactive dental care, which includes addressing wisdom teeth concerns through a smooth and safe extraction procedure.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to emerge, typically between the ages of 17 and 25. They were once essential for our ancestors who relied on tougher diets that wore down their teeth. However, due to evolutionary changes and advancements in food processing, modern human jaws have evolved to be smaller, leaving insufficient room for the proper eruption and alignment of wisdom teeth.

The Need for Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Many individuals experience complications with their wisdom teeth due to limited space and improper alignment. Common issues that necessitate wisdom teeth extraction include:

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: When there is not enough space for wisdom teeth to emerge fully, they can become trapped (impacted) beneath the gumline. This can lead to pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth.
  • Crowding: Wisdom teeth that attempt to erupt but lack space can cause crowding and misalignment of adjacent teeth.
  • Infection and Gum Disease: Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create pockets where bacteria can accumulate, leading to gum inflammation and infections.
  • Tooth Decay: Wisdom teeth are located at the back of the mouth, making them challenging to clean properly. This can increase the risk of tooth decay and cavities.
  • Cysts and Tumors: In some cases, cysts or tumors may form around impacted wisdom teeth, leading to potential bone damage.

The Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure

Wisdom teeth extraction is a routine dental procedure performed by skilled dentists or oral surgeons. Here’s what you can expect during the process:

  • Evaluation and X-Rays: Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination and take X-rays to assess the position and condition of your wisdom teeth.
  • Anesthesia: Before the extraction, local anesthesia or other sedation options may be used to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
  • Extraction: If the wisdom teeth are fully erupted, they can be extracted similarly to any other tooth. If they are impacted, a small incision may be made in the gum to access and remove the teeth.
  • Stitches: Depending on the complexity of the extraction, stitches may be used to close the incisions.
  • Recovery: Your dentist will provide post-operative instructions, and you’ll be advised to follow a soft-food diet and keep the extraction sites clean to aid in healing.

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The extraction of problematic wisdom teeth offers various benefits, including:

  • Prevention of Dental Complications: Removing impacted or problematic wisdom teeth can prevent potential dental issues and discomfort in the future.
  • Preserving Dental Alignment: Extraction can prevent crowding and misalignment of existing teeth.
  • Reduced Risk of Infection: Extracting impacted wisdom teeth reduces the risk of infections and gum disease.
  • Enhanced Oral Health: Eliminating problematic wisdom teeth contributes to overall oral health and hygiene.

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common and necessary dental procedure that ensures your oral health remains in peak condition.
